How to Come Up with Good Interior Decorating Ideas

We all have different ideas on how to design our homes from what color we paint the walls, to the furniture we choose, and right through to the finishing touches that really finish off our chosen themes and styles.

But how do you get some good interior decorating ideas in the first place? Assuming you have a blank canvas of a room in which to start, how do you decide how the finished result will look?

Finding a Place to Start

A good starting place is to think about what effect you want to create in each particular room. Do you want it to be somewhere you can go to relax and unwind after a hard day’s work? Does it need to be somewhere the whole family can go and enjoy themselves if they want to? Or will your interior decorating ideas need to reflect the fact that you will have to entertain other people in that room?

However you approach the project, it’s important to have a strong set of interior decorating ideas to begin with, in order to make sure that you don’t get halfway through your project and realize you haven’t got any ideas on how to finish it.

What Do You Like?

It goes without saying that your interior decorating ideas should be based on things that you like, whether that is colors, themes, particular fabrics or anything else that may trigger off some good interior decorating ideas.

If you start from your likes and dislikes, you will have a much firmer base on which to plan your design.

Start With a Scrapbook

This is an excellent way to get your interior decorating ideas out of your head and down onto paper, without having to spend much money starting to put them into practice. It gives you an opportunity to see what your finished design will look like before starting it for real.

Cut pictures, colors and items out of magazines and put them into a rough sketch of your room, to see how they would fit together. You can also go to your local DIY store and grab some samples of wallpaper and paint colors that you like and put those into your collage too.

This will help you to see how the finished results will come out. If you have catalogs with items of furniture you want to buy in them, cut those out and add them in too. This way you will see how your interior decorating ideas can change your whole home.

Good tip. This is a tactic that has served me well through the years. I like to read various magazines that have a home design focus or subtext, including Architectural Digest, Home & Design, Home by Design, Coastal Living, and Santa Barbara Magazine, to name just a few.

When I find pictures of a design or furnishings that I really like, I tear them out and keep them in a file folder for future reference. Sometimes such ideas are easy to copy at a reasonable price. Then, I stay on the lookout for items that can help me achieve that desired look.

Seek simplicity, comfort and value!

Wonderful finds here! Also, I found something interesting I thought I would share. A way of displaying both photos and your family name in a very personalize way. There’s a website called AlphabaetPIX where you can create a word or name using elegant black & white photos of architecture and nature. This is possible because the photos are shot in such a way that they also form the shape of a letter of the alphabet. After you type in your name on the homepage, the next page displays a frame with blank windows where your photos will go. You click on these one at a time for each letter in your name, and are given a number of photo letter choices from which to pick to fill your frame. The artwork can be designed entirely by you, online, in minutes. You can even see your final design on the website.
You really have to see it/design one to get how lovely/cool/personal this is.
Check out the concept here: http://www.alphabetpix.com

Here’s more information from the website,
AlphabetPIX - the hottest new idea in NAME/WORD ART. Unique personalized name art YOU CREATE with Photos That Look Like Letters – and in just 3 easy steps online. Create any name, word or saying you can think of with over 600+ stunning photos in BW & Sepia of architecture, nature and the world around us. Symbols, Numbers and Hearts are now available too.
Soooo personal and sooooo absolutely beautiful on the wall, a keepsake treasured for years to come.
Most people create their artwork with their last name in the frame, though the possibilities are endless—Words to inspire like “Believe, Love, Faith”, a wedding gift with the couple’s surname or “Forever”, a housewarming gift, a child’s name for their room or the family name hung over the fireplace—an heirloom loved for generations…

Enjoy!

Don’t stop at magazines! There are so many opportunities to gather information on the web. Try personal blogs, business blogs, free information resources, photo galleries, and online portfolios of interior decorators.

The opportunities to learn and create your own style are endless on the internet (and cheaper than buying magazines!)
